Bulb Types

The following bulbs are most commonly found around the house. You may have some others. We have tried to include all those that have energy saving versions.

Fitting types

Normal lightbulbs come in four main fittings: Bayonet Cap, Small Bayonet Cap, Edison screw and Small Edison screw. Examples are below with other abbreviations or codes that they are known by.
Note. There are very few energy saving bulbs that work with dimmers. If you have a large number of bulbs controlled by dimmer switches then you may have to wait for lighting technology to develop (and it is moving quickly!)”

Halogen Bulbs

Many people have small halogen spotlights in their kitchens and bathrooms. They are either low voltage (12V) or mains voltage (240 volts). The low voltage bulbs have two small spikes while the mains voltage halogens have two pins with flat, rounded ends. In our survey we refer to the low energy, spike fittings as MR16/GU5.3 and the mains voltage as GU10. You will probably find these codes on the bulb itself. At the moment we don't have any low energy alternatives to dimmable low voltage bulbs but we do for the high voltage ones.
